Art and Literature

Throughout history, art has inspired, soothed and called people to action. Twentieth century art is no different. Therefore, this month’s newsletter is a review of some of the literary, artistic and cinematographic figures from Latin America who have shaped culture through their expression.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is one of Mexico’s most famous female artists. She did not always aspire to be an artist, however. Only after a serious bus accident when she was eighteen did she begin to teach herself to paint. Now, she is internationally respected for her self-portraits, which use brilliant colors. One of Kahlo's earliest supporters was her husband, Diego Rivera (1886-1957), a trained artist whose dramatic murals are said to have revived fresco painting in Latin America. His murals are also noted for their bold use of color, but unlike his wife's personal portraits, his work focuses on depicting broad themes in Mexican history.

Chile
’s Pablo Neruda (1904-1973) is considered one of the world’s greatest love poets. His given name was Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, but he wrote and published under the pseudonym Pablo Neruda; some speculate that he did so to avoid criticism from his father, who had always discouraged him from writing. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. Another Chilean poet, Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957), was the first Latin American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, which was awarded to her in 1945. While Mistral's poems reflect her passion for human causes, they were not the only way in which she served her community. She also acted as an educator, cultural minister and diplomat to various European countries.

Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel García Márquez are perhaps the two writers who have brought Latin American literature into the global limelight. Borges (1899-1986) was from Argentina and is best known for the treatment of time in his writing. Like Frida Kahlo, a nearly fatal accident stimulated an exceptionally creative period in Borges' life in which he primarily wrote stories. García Márquez (b. 1928) began his career as a journalist in Colombia, and has since established himself as a novelist and short story writer. His work is best known for its style, magic realism, which combines reality and fantasy. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982.

Brazilian novelist Jorge Amado (b. 1912) began his literary career at the age of twenty with the publication of his first novel. Most of his novels depict the city life of the lower classes in Bahia, and often reflect his communist ideology. Much of his work satirizes the Brazilian government, which imprisoned him in 1935 and banned his books due to his leftist activities.

Walter Salles, most recently honored for his film about life in Brazil, "Central do Brasil" ("Central Station"), is one of Brazil’s most acclaimed directors. He began as a documentary filmmaker in 1986, focusing on social issues in Brazil and the search for an identity, both national and individual. He continues to address the same issues in his narrative films, as seen in "Central Station," which tells the story of an orphaned boy's relationship with a woman who writes letters for the illiterate in Rio’s Central Station.

Whether giving voice to silent segments of the population, taking readers or viewers on a fantasy ride or both, Latin American writers, artists and filmmakers have made a lasting impact on twentieth century culture. Their contributions are vast and varied and cannot be summarized briefly, but I hope that you've enjoyed this cultural journey through the artistic movements of Latin America in recent history.

Scientific Discoveries

Great minds have hailed from all over the globe. Here is a look at some of the great European thinkers and scientists of the modern era, and the revolutionary minds who paved the way for their discoveries.

An array of scientific fields have felt the impact of Italian thinkers: mathematics from Leonardo Fibonacci, astronomy from Galileo Galilei, and physics of electricity from Alessandro Volta, to name a few. The 20th century offered us equally important Italian thinkers, however. At the beginning of the century, Maria Montessori--the first female in Italy to earn an M.D.--pioneered the children's learning movement. In physics, Enrico Fermi broke new ground with his pivotal discoveries.

Fermi was not alone, however, in his quest for answers in the field of physics; Pavel Cherenkov of Russia was a key mind in the world of physics during the 20th century. In the philosophical community, Russian native Ayn Rand made a global impact on audiences when she published her politically charged novels, which develop an "objectivist" philosophy on the human struggle.

Three famous Swiss thinkers lived during the 18th century: the great mathematician Leonhard Euler, the philosopher and literary genius Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and the renowned chemist Daniel Bernoulli, who is the premiere figure in the development of fluid mechanics. In the 20th century, however, Carl Jung turned the microscope inward and made landmark discoveries about human psychology.

Austrian Ludwig Wittgenstein paved the way for modern logic and the philosophy of language. Also from Austria were the renowned psychologist Sigmund Freud, and the great physicist Kurt Godel, who gave us his "Incompleteness Theorem."

Hungarian native Nicola Tesla is one of the most admired scientists of the 20th century. He is revered for his work in Electrical Engineering. The Hungarian prodigy Jon Von Neumann pioneered game theory and computer science, and contributed valuable insights into quantum mechanics.

Poland was home to one of the most prominent astronomers in history, Nicholaus Copernicus, who--500 years ago--furthered our understanding of nature, breaking old paradigms and shattering dogma. In the 20th century, Polish icon Marie Curie broke new ground in medicine.

Several great English thinkers have made a significant impact during the 20th century, too. The logic of A.N. Whitehead and Bertrand Russell at the beginning of the century paved the way for the father of the modern computer: another Englishman, Alan Turing. Paul Dirac is a keystone quantum physicist of the century, and Steven Hawking is the greatest theoretical cosmologist of our time. One of the most significant discoveries of the century, the double helix of DNA, was made by a pair of scientists: Englishman Francis Crick and James Watson from the United States.

While, in the 20th century, Frenchman Henry Poincare played a substantial role in the development of mathematics, some of France's greatest contributions to global thinking were made in the area of existential philosophy. Simone De Beauvoir and Jean Paul Sartre broke new ground with their reflections on the human existence, while others, like Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault examined language, literature, and political structures in a new light.

The 20th century offered no less for German thought. Gottlob Frege and Edmund Husserl were two of the fathers of modern logic, offering insights which would eventually lead to the evolution of the computer. Yet it was in physics that Germany touched the world the most in the 1900's. Albert Einstein gave insights into general and special relativity. Quantum mechanics was pioneered by Werner Heisenberg, Max Planck, Karl Schwarzschild, and Wolfgang Pauli's "Exclusion Principle"... all of which contributed to current quantum cosmology.

The Spanish also contributed much to scientific understanding during the last century. The worldly and very well accomplished biologist, Severo Ochoa de Luarca, broke new ground in biochemistry, physiology and enzymology in the first half of the century, offering valuable insights into metabolism. Another leader in his field, Spaniard Santiago Ramón y Cajal, was Ochoa de Luarca's mentor. At the turn of the century, Ramón y Cajal, born in Aragon, was a world leader in pathological anatomy. His study of pathology and the nervous system contributed to the current understanding of these vital subjects.

The list of influential thinkers in the fields of science and technology will continue almost indefinitely as we travel the world to uncover each culture's contribution.

Succes in Carrier, IQ vs EQ

IQ (Intelligences quotient) is a high bounty that should be thanks for, but one factor not only because of the quality of his IQ. Other factors that affect career success and your ability to build relationships with one Emotional Intelligences (EI).

According to Daniel Goleman author of Working with Emotional Intelligences said, almost 70 percent from the performance of a career in the depending on the ability to know oneself and to maximize the potential, ability to motivate themselves and socializing. Can be said with the ability, someone looking for rift able to maximize the opportunities that come on.

In addition, emotional intelligence is the key to open the network of business relationships that effective. According to Doug Lennick, Vice President of American Express, says emotional competencies are themselves the most important quality that must be developed and access as a valuable experience. In the work environment day-to-day, you will face problems of non more complex than simply relying on IQ alone.

Meanwhile, according to Warren Bennis, author of a book Becoming Leaders found that the more emotional intelligence than IQ in a career field. While the IQ also play an important role, but I can not make someone superior, while EQ can. With the ability someone EQ has the capacity to use emotions effectively and make you a better manager for himself. Why? Because the ability to make their performance EQ working relationship with colleague, boss or your client's business.

Susan Dunn, author of The Benefits of EQ Coaching for Mid-Level Executives and Professionals said, most of the executive, CEO, and the professional skills of analysis and focus. They also use the advanced figures, but 90 percent of them have verbal communication skills are good. Many professionals also develop a formal education for many years, but do not have the experience and training, not able to survive in the world of work. "The ability to manage the EQ to be selling for a worker, once you learn about creativity and new things, you certainly can not do clips," she said.

Not only ingenuity finish the job, but only when the accused face an unexpected situation that your mental readiness charged here. One example is the richest man in the world according to Forbes magazine, the William Gates III, admitted that he is studying at Harvard University academic value although quite normally. So, someone in the academic intelligence remains the points more, though not only because of IQ. "A person is able to develop the EQ while IQ generally can not be improved again," he said.

Susan added, emotional intelligence not only bring someone in the success but also the balance of life, health and happiness. Besides developing leadership talent and the ability to see things that have the potential to become large, is the ability EQ.

Career Success tips:

* Continue practice your ability. Do not dally to see the opportunity to learn. Stop thinking 'This is not my field of work, so I do not want to know'. The more experience you get, the more (Intelligences quotient) the opportunity to reach your success.
* Be optimistic. The biggest strength of the people who are successful think and be optimistic. Thus, you will believe in yourself to achieve the desire. In addition, also needed to face all challenges.

Great Humanitarians

Even if we confine our study to a brief span of years, there are countless individuals whose efforts to improve conditions in their communities, countries, or on a global scale deserve attention. This Newsletter pays tribute to the accomplishments of a few important humanitarians and civil leaders from Asia, the Middle East and Northern Africa whose influence was internationally recognized in the twentieth century.

Eisaku Sato served as prime minister of Japan from 1964-1972. He is widely recognized for his diplomacy in building peaceful international relations both within Asia and with other parts of the world. His rejection of nuclear arms, which led to the signing of the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, earned him the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1974.

From China, Sun Yat-sen (Dr. Sun Yixian) was a revolutionary leader whose political agenda focused on overthrowing the Qing dynasty in China to establish a republic. His aims included large-scale industrialization in China. He served as provisional president of the Chinese republic in 1911 and later led China from 1923-25. Many consider him to be the father of modern China.

Bstan-'dzin-rgya-mtsho was enthroned as the fourteenth Dalai Lama in Tibet in 1940 when he was only five years old. He fled to India in 1959 after the Tibetan people's unsuccessful revolt against the Chinese government, and established a government in exile in the Himalayan Mountains. The Nobel Prize for Peace was awarded to him in 1989, in recognition of his nonviolent methods of protest against Chinese rule in Tibet.

In 1991, the Nobel Committee awarded its Prize for Peace to Aung San Suu Kyi, a peaceful protester for democracy and human rights in Myanmar, then called Burma. For those actions, she was kept under house arrest for six years (1989-1995). She was still in isolation when she received the Nobel Prize.

Golda Meir was an astute political leader devoted to Israel and its independence. She served as prime minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974 and was recognized for her efforts to maintain peace in the Middle East during those years. Only after her death in 1978 did the public discover that she had been fighting leukemia for twelve years before her death.

Anwar el-Sadat, an Egyptian army officer, served as the president of Egypt from 1970 to 1981. He worked with Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin to establish peaceful ties between their countries. Both leaders received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1978 for their negotiations. In 1979, peace was reached between the two countries.

Mohandas Gandhi of India (commonly called Mahatma Gandhi) is internationally respected for his method of passive resistance and nonviolent protest against British rule in India. His civil rights campaigns inspired and touched the world, and lent hope to many--even Albert Einstein, who hoped that Ghandi's promotion of nonviolence could help prevent the violence made possible by the atomic bomb.

Some of these figures of modern history may already be familiar to you. In any case, we hope that you've enjoyed this look at a few great leaders and even discovered something new!

The Future Of Hybrid Cars

Okay, so most of us know that the flying cars from the Jetsons were not exactly the most realistic expectations that we could have had for the future. Then again, the cartoons of Hanna-Barbera didn't exactly focus on realism. That isn't to say that today's technology doesn't have its amazing qualities, in fact, one of the most accomplished advances here are the hybrid cars that have grown in prominence. Don't think that hybrids have finished their advancement, though. Oh, no. In fact, take a look at what's in store for the future of hybrids:

1. Go, Baby, Go! - Rumor has it that manufacturers of hybrid cars are attempting planning on increasing the efficiency of hybrid engines, hopefully being able to push these vehicles up to 70 miles to the gallon. General Motors is already looking to develop their new hybrid to that 70 mile mark in 2010, and may be able to push that number even higher.

2. Better than the Coppertop - Lithium-ion batteries have done amazing things to our lives, considering they are found in laptops, cell phones, PDAs and iPods. The lifespan and portability of these particular batteries puts them worlds above older batteries, making our lives more accessible. As it stands, these batteries are only used in smaller electronics, but there is scientific research in the hopes that soon, these Lithium-Ion batteries can be adapted to the automotive industry. If hybrids can use Lith-Ion batteries, then cars can accelerate faster to higher speeds, be even more efficient, and would be able to lengthen the distance between fill-ups. Not only would those advantages be available, new hybrids would be much more affordable to consumers, and hopefully would solve a lot of problems. Especially since, as it stands, most of the battery packs used in current hybrids could be much more efficient than they are.

3. No more Clown Car - Instead of trying to fit eight or nine people in a car that can only really handle four or five, hybrids should be much more roomy on the inside, but hopefully still be easier to cope with. In fact, the hope is that as time progresses, the hybrids will match with their conventional counterparts in size and storage capacity.

4. You Want One, We Have One - As it stands, just about every manufacturer will have a hybrid in this year's line-up. Those who have not, such as Volkswagen, are planning and developing their own hybrids that will be brought out in the near future. The hope is that soon, no matter which dealer you want to purchase your hybrid from, in the future, you should be able to find one anywhere. So, give it two years and with any luck, you'll have your very own hybrid, no matter the dealer.

5. California Will Be Proud - Hybrid cars are already extremely efficient, but there is always room for improvement. 90% of the hybrid cars on the market today could easily be more efficient, although, Zero Emissions won't be possible, seeing as how hybrids still require gasoline. Although, 95% to 99% better is a pretty close second.

So, even though the hybrid you want may not be available yet, there is hope no matter what. As long as consumers are willing to buy hybrids now, these advances will be more affordable, and soon you could be enjoying your very own Volkswagen Beetle Hybrid with close to zero emissions and plenty of room for that walking stick you just had to bring camping with you.

The History Of Hybrid Cars

Ever curious how exactly hybrid cars became the economic revelation they are today? Well, it definitely didn't start in the 1990s, that's for sure. In fact, alternative-fuel vehicles and transportation were being developed as far back as 1665, which Flemish inventors used to experiment with steam-power in order to power unmanned cars, and, moving forward to the 1700s, steam-powered carriages.

For the most part, though, these were small developments, and it wasn't until nearly 1900, in 1898, that the first real hybrid car made its grand debut. Although there are conflicting views as to which hybrid came first, the actual hybrid car developed by Porsche utilized a similar engine as in conventional vehicles today to rotate a generator that would power electric motors, located in the actual car wheel's hubs. This particular Porsche was able to travel to nearly 40 miles simply utilizing the power in the battery pack before it had to quit, and by 1899, two more hybrids had appeared in Paris, at the city's Salon.

In the earlier years of the twentieth century, there were thousands of hybrid and electric cars being produced and showcased. It seemed that electric and hybrid cars would be the way to travel, and in 1900, the "voiturette," the first of these hybrids, was made by Pieper and was very similar to the hybrids we already know. The only difference was most likely in the exterior. After all, the French didn't necessarily have flames painted along the car and spinners on the rims. For this particular hybrid, the purpose of the battery was to help the car in making its way up hills, and while the car was cruising, the battery would recharge itself. There was even a reliability test in 1902 to see which would fare better, a hybrid, or steam-powered or gas-powered vehicles.

But, then, at some point around the 1920s, hybrids suddenly vanished from the public eye, as if they had never existed. Why and how did that happen?

The answer to that is two words: Henry Ford. Ford's Model T was not only gas-powered, but his production utilized the assembly line, which made these cars much faster to produce, and easier to do so. Regardless of Ford's later influence, though, in 1905, H. Piper, an engineer, was hoping to patent his own hybrid vehicle that would use an electric motor along with a gas-powered engine. Even in 1905, someone had thought of the hybrids we would use today. The problem was finding the support needed.

There were also hybrid trucks that were used from 1910 to 1918, and still, hybrid cars offered in 1916 could still reach 48 miles to the gallon, although speeds were much lower. Still, efficiency-wise, the hybrid from 1916 was better than the vast majority of conventional and hybrid cars on the market.

Unfortunately, any plans for hybrids were dropped in the 1920s when Ford's Model T flooded the automobile market. From 1920 to 1965, there was simply no chance for hybrids to develop. Then, in 1969, GM began to experiment with hybrid cars again, and the next thirty years would be filled with tireless efforts of scientists, inventors, and engineers to help create a fast, eco-friendly hybrid.

Finally, in 1997, manufacturers Toyota and Audi premiered their hybrid cars to mixed reactions. The vehicles were hardly flawless, so it took some time to before hybrids were picked back up by manufacturers and kinks were worked out.

But, the most interesting fact about all of this is that considering the history of hybrids, these cars were originally the vehicle of choice for most engineers. So, how could things have been different if hybrids had remained in the spotlight and not blotted out by Henry Ford?

Create A Web Site Or build A Blog?

Many small business owners are jumping on the blogging craze and after a couple of months, they come to realize that blogging is far more difficult than the time it takes to create a web site.

Should you create a web site or build a blog; that's the question.

Before you go out and build a blog, you should understand what blogging is. Blogs are very similar to web site building, except for the fact that your web site pages are more seo friendly and stay longer in the search engines.

A blog gets updated often, and you will have to keep adding content on a regular basis, to keep your blog ranking highly in the search engines.

I believe that your much better off, building web pages that are content rich, and very informative, that will keep your visitors on your site. Once, you have a steady flow of visitor, then you should add a blog to your site.

Once you create a web site, a theme based web site, will generate more traffic than a regular blog. Blogs don't attract buying visitors. Readers of blogs, just read the newest post and dissapears. Unlike web sites, your visitors spend more time on your sites, following the links you have added to your pages. Seeing that your pages are all related.

I always create a web site, just for the purpose of pre-selling and to help me with my affiliate marketing. One you learn how to build a web site for profit, you will come to realize that a blog lacks structure. The whole blogging concept is very complicated for newbies. They build a blog, and do absolutely nothing with it, and then give up.

You will understand the logical concept behind building themed sites, they target a specific topic, and your visitor will be able to follow this process much easier than a from your blog. Once you create your web site, with easy to follow links, the pattern will be easy to follow, and easy to understand. A blog should be mainly used to get visitors to your site. Once they are on your blog, lead them to your web pages. Creating web sites with that frame of mind will win in the long run.

No matter which web site builder you choose to create a web site, your chances of making money online with a web site will be much greater than any of the top blogging platforms online.

    GUYS will be GLAM

According to Ve Handojo men have been diligent to go to the spa, have been increasingly brand-minded. Men also understand what the difference between twilly and handkerchief. You have a problem with that?

They're, who have been more fortunate even more Glam. They scheduled a world-class fly from Italy and London to measure the body, then order the kinds of two-piece suit in large numbers. Ten setting suits for summer home, ten settings for the apartment in Soho, and so on. So, given all the initials designed by world-class artists as well. Not only that custommade suit jacket, but also sports-car and personal jet.

Yes, we love the Glam life, girls! Please note that appear glamour is not the exclusive rights of women. Since the days of Cary Grant to David Beckham, men are very concerned about the appearance. Our hero is a James Bond that his suits remain siluet form of a man who perfectly, although the intent somersault to save the world from disaster. Or Batman is the alter ego of a millionaire who can easily do the final standards put on black tie. Whiz kind of Rambo and Rocky have been through this period because of physical violence is increasingly are far below the intellectuality.
And, sorry! This is not something new. Men have been "flirtatious" since the 18th century when they occupied an legging, three-quarter pants, vest with the "weight" embroidery, Bolero, and the "curly" wig. Use face powder and lipstik also have been known since that time.

In the war times and depressed has eliminate fashion breaks at the moment. However, now the world economy is creeping to the top again. Bilionaire, a gold mine in digitally do not need "war" costumes with appropriate activities. They can use any, from jeans to Yohji Yamamoto shirts.

Now, when we start to bored when many kinds of label start to be in our foreheads, from the dandy, metrosexual, uberseksual, until the transvestite! Oh, come on! Why, if men want to appear Glam there must be a label it? Why, if I wear sneakers gold should be no question, "How a party where? Why take the time my friend got his tote bag to his office must have question, "Exhausted from the market, Man?

Recently, I witnessed a beautiful boutique in the Ermenegildo Zegna. A wife and children who have been through the middle awesome party just sit patiently waiting the head of the families of its slice and dice setting. Due to the relatives they are still, of course I signed in and strikes, while giving opinions about the follow-setting suits. Men aged 50-and insist that he should get a new Zegna suit. He gives advice that is not foreign anymore in my ear, "Hey, young man! All men must have at least a new Zegna suit."

I'm dumbfounded, as if to get a new father figure. That's what I'm talking about! Not a problem specific brand in the loyalties, but this evidence about the vision of a family man (who should be "non-modern") in the appearance of prime. Relatives far I have been through this time of "show up", have been established, but if it remains a matter of appearance does not want to impose the original t-shirt with polyester miraculous.

Shown is the maximum for men do not need many reasons again. This is also our nature, tut. Men do not need to have a reason "to go to the party after working hours", to go in the morning put Calvin Klein suit and silver skinny tie. No need anymore to put a label metrosexual face cream every morning and night. No more stories "to the shopping market" to bring the tote bag to the office. It's just fashion, and fashion does not always need reasons. Like it or not, guys will be Glam.
